Volvo Penta engineers are guaranteeing, testing and evaluating electric drive solutions designed to help power the next generation of the company’s products. Collaboration is key, and Volvo Penta works closely with customers and suppliers to explore viable electric driveline solutions.

“Environmental sustainability needs are closer than ever to customers’ business needs as electric options are becoming more and more feasible,” says Peter Granqvist, Volvo Penta’s chief technology officer. “Individual needs in sectors such as construction, mining and materials handling vary, as well as for commercial and entertainment marine applications. However, there is now a clear trend from all customer groups: the need for cleaner, quieter and more efficient drivelines. “

Proven technology platform

An undeniable benefit of being part of the Volvo Group is access to advanced technology. Volvo Penta continues to develop the proven electromobility platform that has been used successfully by Volvo’s bus and truck divisions for years. The company’s new electrification workshop is located right in front of the Volvo Group’s 140-member electromobility team. Both teams are collaborating closely in the search for synergies between different applications, as well as in the development of new solutions for Volvo Penta customers.

“This broad deployment of battery technology means there is increasing knowledge and capacity to share across industries,” says Thulin. “Increasing energy density and reducing the size of batteries allow for new machine designs. And the cost reduction means that the cost of ownership is reaching a point where, for various applications, it will be more profitable to use an electric machine than one with a conventional motor. In addition, the reduction of the times of load and the increase of the availability of infrastructures of load in the warehouses of the clients and in other central locations will also be important arguments to promote the electrification ”.

Collaboration with the client

A key factor in Volvo Penta developing electrical solutions is helping customers secure the future of their businesses. As such, the company is collaborating with customers to assess the best options and run pilot projects to determine the direction of future product development.

“It is essential to spend time with customers, both OEMs and operators, to understand how they can benefit from electrification, how the machines and equipment should be used, and how and where the load can be incorporated into the activity,” he says. Thulin. “If we know all these details, we can propose a system tailored to your needs.”
